In 2016, Sam was chosen to represent York St John University within the York Open Studios Annual event. He took this opportunity to showcase his current workings, monumental in scale and abstract in appearance. The paintings on display were created using a range of techniques such as loose brush work, torn-up paper markings and a variety of materials such as linen, different Fabriano papers, oil paint, and a complex range array of gels, mediums and varnishes.
